Dugout (Sod House)
The replica of a dugout house at the Evansville Historical Foundation, built in the summer of 1991, demonstrates the typical first dwelling of area pioneers.
The first priority of the pioneers who settled the land was to build barns to protect the livestock and plant crops. The dugout was often the first living space for families as they established their homestead.
